THURSTON TALK: By Mary Ellen Psaltis—Providence uses community interpreters, telephonic interpreters and video remote interpreter (VRI) devices throughout the hospital using a service called INDEMAND Interpreting or INDE for short.

The InDemand devices intend to improve the patient experience. "So we are rolling out this week into the Magic Valley, Wood River and Jerome our new video interpreting device that will help us support our patient population that is limited in English proficient, or the deaf and hard of hearing," said Michelle Ross, the director of patient services. The interpretation system InDemand will allow patients the ability to communicate with their caregivers through a virtual interpreter immediately.

NPR affiliate show, The 21st, aired a segment on how LEP and Deaf patients are getting better care at Illinois health centers thanks to immediate access to medically qualified interpreters (VRI). The 21st is a public radio talk show that explores news, culture and stories that matter to Illinois. The segment featured InDemand trilingual interpreter Jinhi Roskamp and Rush-Copley Medical Center, Patient Advocate and Language Services Coordinator, Rosalinda Justiniano.
