InDemand Interpreting, a technology-enabled language services performance improvement company and a leading video remote interpreting (VRI) provider within Healthcare, announces a webinar: “Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions on New ACA Section 1557 Language Access Regulations” with the presenters David Hunt, president and CEO of Critical Measures, a national management consulting and training organization specializing in cross-cultural healthcare and the law of language access, and Riikka Salonen, manager of Healthcare Equity and Inclusion at Oregon Health & Science University.

Providers nationwide continue to have many questions about major language access changes under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act that went into effect in July. The new provisions apply to every health program or activity, any part of which receives Federal financial assistance. This webinar covered the sweeping new anti-discrimination provisions under the Affordable Care Act and the effects on the law of language access for limited English proficient (LEP) and Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and the most frequently asked questions surrounding 1557:

  • Why did the DHHS’ Office of Civil Rights issue a new final rule pertaining to ACA Section 1557?
  • To whom does the new Section 1557 rule apply?
  • How does the new Section 1557 rule change providers’ language access obligations to LEP and Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients?
  • What was the effective date for the final rule? Are there any exceptions?
  • What must our organization do to comply with the rule’s notice of consumer rights and tagline requirements? What resources exist to help providers comply with these requirements?
  • Is Section 1557 currently being enforced and, if so, how?
  • What types of provider conduct is clearly prohibited under Section 1557?

David B. Hunt, JD who is also a former civil rights attorney and a national expert on the law of language access in healthcare will provided insight and analysis to each of these questions. In addition, Riikka Salonen, manager of Healthcare Equity and Inclusion at Oregon Health & Science University, provided real-world insights into her challenges navigating and implementing the more stringent regulations.

“We were honored and pleased to partner with Critical Measures and Riikka Salonen to conduct a webinar that will benefit healthcare organizations nationwide,” said Cecil Kost, Chairman and CEO of InDemand Interpreting. “InDemand’s video remote interpreting meets the new stricter requirements offering providers accessible, cost effective and reliable language services solution across the care continuum.”
